Abstract

Dental caries is a dental and oral health problem that is often found in elementary school children. Low student knowledge about dental health is an important factor that contributes to the high rate of caries. The behavior of brushing teeth in children must be done in daily life without feeling forced. One of the ways to prevent tooth and mouth pain in children is the need for counseling. Audiovisual-based educational media such as videos can increase the effectiveness of extension. This research aims to find out the effectiveness of using video media on students' knowledge about dental caries. This research is a descriptive research with the pre-test post-test design group method. The population contained in the study is in the form of all students totaling 254 students and the sample of this study is 50 students from class V and VI UPT SPF SD Inpres Panaikang 1/1 Makassar who were selected with the purposive sampling technique. The inclusion criteria are students of class V and VI and are willing to be a research sample, while the exclusion criteria are not students of class V and VI and are not willing to be a research sample. Research instrument in the form of a questionnaire on the knowledge of dental caries. The research procedure consists of giving a pre-test, an intervention in the form of counseling with video media, and giving a post-test. Data was analyzed with Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. There is a statistically significant difference p=0,001 in student knowledge after being given counseling using video media. Video media is proven to be effective in increasing students' knowledge about dental caries, so it can be used as an alternative to dental health education media in elementary school. It is recommended that dental health workers and teachers use video media regularly in counseling, as well as conducting follow-up research on the long-term effects of behavior change.
